This course is an Introduction to the foundations of Mindfulness, which is suitable for beginners. It is also a safe space for self-development, sharing, reflection, support and friendschip. The location is a private house in South Abingdon, and there will be no more than 6 participants. Sessions start on Thursday 7th September and run until 26th October; each session will last 2 hours (8-10pm).

Mindfulness is defined as paying attention to our moment by moment experience in a way that is non-judgemental and kind. In the beginning we notice how our attention is like a butterfly flitting from one thought to the next. So we start by slowing down and settling our mind through regulating breathing and counting. We then introduce practices that ground us allowing our attention to drop out of the swarm of thoughts in our heads into the sensory awareness of the body. We then learn to rest in the present moment getting used to disengaging from our habits of compulsive doing. And then, when we notice our attention drifting away into thinking, we learn to work with the mindfulness supports of sound.

We are initiated into this process through the core practices of settling, grounding, resting and mindfulness support. We also practice body scan and walking meditation and simple practices for integrating mindfulness into daily life. We simultaneously work on developing kindness as a basis for self compassion.

Participants receive an Attendance Certificate if they’ve attended at least 6 times.

Teas are provided, meditation cushions, meditation benches and meditation chairs are available. The floor is carpeted softly. Please make sure you wear comfortable clothing.

A non-moulting little fluffy dog that looks like Snowy is part of this group, always. His name is Jack, and he is a little nervous to start with but settles quickly and mellows into the space. He’s usually loved by everyone.

The course starts on 7th September and will run for 8 weeks every Thursday.
